Roles & permissions
Access in Canopy is granted per workspace. The same person can be an Admin in one workspace and a Viewer in another. Manage everyone under Workspace settings → Members. See Accounts & workspaces for how workspaces relate to accounts.
Permissions by role
Role notes
- Owner - one per workspace. Manages members (invite any role, role changes, removal), the seat pool, billing, Stripe Connect payouts, API tokens, paid template listings, and workspace verification. Can transfer ownership to any member (Members → ⋯ → Transfer ownership); the previous owner becomes an Admin.
- Admin - full edit access (create, edit, and delete maps). Can invite Editors and Viewers into open (already-paid) seats and cancel pending invites. Cannot invite other Admins, change roles, remove members, transfer ownership, grow the paid seat pool, or manage billing, Stripe, API tokens, or selling - those stay with the Owner. (Inviting into a full pool would add a paid seat, so that's the Owner's call: ask them to add a seat first.)
- Editor - create and edit maps; can share publicly. No member management or billing access.
- Viewer - read-only. Can open maps, browse nodes and Intel, and use exports, but cannot edit anything.
Viewers are free - editors are a seat
Only the roles that can change something cost money. Owner, Admin and Editor each occupy one paid seat. Viewers are free and unlimited on every plan, including Free.
That means you can invite as many read-only teammates, clients or stakeholders as you like without touching your bill. See Subscriptions & seats for the full billing model.
On the Free plan you are the only editor, but you can still invite unlimited viewers. Upgrade to Pro to add Editors and Admins.
Changing a role
Open Workspace settings → Members, pick a member from the ⋯ menu, and choose a new role. Promoting a Viewer to Editor or Admin takes a paid seat (and grows the pool if none is open); demoting someone to Viewer frees one.
