What does adding or removing a seat cost mid-cycle?

Billing · Updated Aug 10, 2026

Adding a seat charges only the days left in the period, and removing one leaves a credit. Put a seat back in the same period and the two usually cancel out, so nothing is charged.

Seat changes are prorated to the day, so you never pay a full month for a few days of access.

**Adding a seat** charges only the remaining days in the current period, then the new total from the next invoice onward. Add a seat with ten days left in a month and you pay roughly a third of a seat today.

**Removing a seat** charges nothing today. The unused time becomes a **credit** on the workspace, which is subtracted from your next invoice automatically. It is not refunded to your card. See subscriptions and seats.

**Adding a seat back in the same period usually costs nothing.** The credit from the earlier removal nets against the new charge. If you went from 3 seats to 1 and then back to 2 within the same period, the credit you are already holding typically covers the seat you are re-adding, so the amount charged is zero.

The confirmation dialog shows the real figure for your subscription at that moment, asked of Stripe directly, rather than assuming a charge. If credit covers the change it will say so.

Two things worth knowing:

  • A credit can only be spent on future invoices **for that workspace**. Cancel before the next invoice and unused credit is not paid out as cash.
  • If your plan is already set to cancel at the end of the period, adding a seat still charges for the days remaining, but the plan still ends on schedule.

Seats and billing are owner-only. Admins can invite people into seats you have already paid for, but only the owner can change how many seats the workspace pays for.
